A Necessary Reminder

You don’t have to look far to discover needs and an often disparaging state of life for many people. That is, if you’re actually looking. It’s easy to turn our heads, look the other direction and pretend that someone else is going to pick up the proverbial slack in the line. However, looking the other way doesn’t make this state of life that others find themselves in go away, it just broadens the separation between “us” and “them”.

I’ve learned over the past few years that quite often the reason that so many of us look away and don’t act is due to feeling overwhelmed. It’s not always that people are cold-hearted; although this is sometimes the explanation. We want to fight fights that we think we have a good chance of winning. That’s just the way we are. And, when we stare at overwhelming issues like the global water crisis, slavery, the millions of orphans throughout the developing world, global poverty and the like, we wonder what we can really contribute. “Can I really make a difference?” “Does it really matter?” “Is there really any hope?”

I’m reminded of this quote:

“I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; I will not refuse to do the something I can do.” -Helen Keller

Imagine if we had this attitude. Imagine your family having this attitude. Imagine your circle of influence….now that could a powerful force.

Doing nothing, changes nothing! Doing something, changes everything!

-Matt
